No matter where you live — you belong here.
Understanding the Rural Reality
Living in a rural or remote community can shape every part of your prostate cancer journey — from getting diagnosed, to accessing specialists, to finding support afterward. Long drives, poor internet, and fewer local resources can make care feel out of reach.
At PC-PEP, we believe your postal code should never determine your quality of care. You deserve the same evidence-based, compassionate support as anyone living next to a major hospital. That’s why we designed PC-PEP to meet you where you are — right at home, on your own schedule, in your own community.
Challenges Faced by Rural Men
- Access to Specialists: Many rural men face long travel times, limited specialist availability, and unreliable internet connections. Local support groups are rare, leaving men to navigate treatment and recovery alone.
- Privacy Concerns: In small towns, everyone knows everyone. Talking about incontinence, sexual health, or mental health can feel uncomfortable or risky. We understand that privacy matters — PC-PEP offers confidential, at-home options that don’t require you to walk into a clinic or support group.
- Emotional Isolation: Distance can make it harder to find connection. Rural men often “tough it out” in silence, leading to higher stress, anxiety, and depression. Our goal is to replace that isolation with belonging — one call, one email, one message at a time.

- Personalized support: from our research team, doctors, and peer mentors who understand rural realities.
- Seasonal cooking video series: simple, affordable, and nutritious recipes made with rural living in mind — featuring local ingredients and what’s in season.

Human Impact Story
One powerful moment came when two rural participants, paired as PC-PEP “buddies,” traveled across provinces to meet in person for the first time. Their video, shared with our community, highlighted how PC-PEP was truly “life-changing”—not only for them but for the many men inspired by their friendship.
Why This Work Matters
Men living in rural and northern regions are more likely to face:
- Reduced access to PSA testing and specialists
- Later-stage diagnoses
- Worse survivorship outcomes compared to urban men
Through Movember’s Health Equity Grant (2025–2028), PC-PEP is tackling these disparities head-on by:
- Developing rural-tailored resources for men and families — from cooking and fitness videos to low-bandwidth program delivery.
- Conducting rural-specific surveys to understand local needs and preferences.
- Hosting stakeholder conferences (first held in March 2025) to unite community leaders, clinicians, and survivors in improving access to care.
We are currently analyzing the data from these initiatives and preparing a report on rural men’s needs to inform national policy and survivorship planning.

This initiative is proudly funded by Movember (January 2025 – January 2028) through a Health Equity Grantawarded to Drs. Gabriela Ilie and Rob Rutledge at Dalhousie University.
Thanks to Movember’s support, PC-PEP is bridging the gap between urban and rural survivorship — ensuring that no man, anywhere, has to face prostate cancer alone. Together, we are building healthier, more connected rural communities across Canada and the world.

You don’t have to leave home to find support. PC-PEP brings it to you — wherever you are.
