PC-PEP Man of the Month: John Moody
Introduction
“Don’t let it spoil your day.”
This month we celebrate John Moody, an inspiring PC-PEP graduate, mentor, and prostate cancer survivor from rural South New Zealand. John first came to PC-PEP after receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis that left him fearful and uncertain. With the support of his wife, his clinical team, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand, he chose Active Surveillance—a path that aligned with his values and his desire to continue living fully, joyfully, and on his own terms.
John embraced the six-month PC-PEP program wholeheartedly. He used the tools, the structure, and the daily practices to rebuild confidence, strengthen his physical and mental well-being, and ground himself emotionally. Over time, he noticed something remarkable: as his anxiety decreased and his overall health improved, his PSA levels stabilized—and have remained stable since completing the program.
Today, John is not only thriving, he is giving back. As a PC-PEP mentor, he supports men across Canada, New Zealand, and around the world who are navigating the confusion and fear that often follow a prostate cancer diagnosis. His humour, warmth, pragmatism, and unwavering positivity have made him a cherished presence in our global PC-PEP community.
John’s guiding messages:
“Life is still beautiful. Hold on to the people and things that give you joy.”
“Don’t let it spoil your day.”
“Active Surveillance is not doing nothing—it’s doing what’s right for you.”
“You can choose courage, even when life hands you uncertainty.”
“PC-PEP gives you the tools, but you are the one who makes the change.”
🎧 Hear John’s Story
In this moving episode, John Moody shares his heartfelt journey from diagnosis to empowerment — navigating uncertainty, fear, and the emotional weight of a prostate cancer diagnosis, all while living in rural South New Zealand. With honesty and humour, John describes how choosing Active Surveillance allowed him to honour his values, stay active, and continue living a life filled with joy, purpose, and connection.
John speaks openly about how community became his lifeline — how hearing other men’s stories reminded him that “there is life after it,” and how PC-PEP offered not just education, but companionship, reassurance, and a sense of belonging he didn’t know he needed. Through PC-PEP’s daily practices and supportive global community, John regained confidence, improved his well-being, and found renewed strength in both his relationships and his outlook on life.
His reflections reveal a powerful truth:
healing is not only physical — it is emotional, relational, and deeply human.
💡 Key Messages of Inspiration
You are not alone.
Even in rural or geographically isolated settings, connection is possible. PC-PEP bridges the gap between clinical care and emotional healing, creating community where none may seem available.
You can be transformed—not just treated.
John discovered that healing extends far beyond medical procedures. Through PC-PEP, he found tools that strengthened his mental health, resilience, and overall well-being.
Love and ritual are powerful medicine.
Small acts of connection—shared morning routines, walks together, moments of reflection—helped John rebuild confidence and cultivate joy.
Mentorship matters.
John’s decision to give back as a mentor reflects his belief that lived experience can light the way for others. His kindness and humility continue to enrich the PC-PEP community.
Wholeness is possible.
John shows that even with ongoing monitoring and uncertainty, it is possible to feel grounded, hopeful, and empowered.
You can evolve.
With support, self-compassion, and daily practices that honour your values, you can move from fear to meaning—from surviving to truly living.
👕 The Story Behind the T-Shirts: Why It Matters
The PC-PEP T-shirts are more than just fabric—they are symbols of connection, awareness, and pride in being part of the PC-PEP community.
These shirts were made possible by David Ashcroft, a fellow PC-PEP mentor and author, who donated proceeds from his memoir Searching for Belonging and designed the artwork himself.
Gestures like David’s mean so much to our lab and the PC-PEP community. Each shirt sparks conversations, raises awareness about prostate cancer, and reminds men everywhere that they are not alone. These small acts help PC-PEP fulfill its mission: forming communities of empowerment that transform isolation into connection and fear into resilience.
